The 4 Leprechauns have arrived in Dublin.

I have an answer to the question posed in my last post.  The answer is, “I do!”  After hanging out for a few hours in the Alaska Airlines Board Room, we began the never easy trek to clear once again through LAX security.  Once again, the security there didn’t disappoint (in the sense of being consistent with their difficulty).  But hey, “Attitude is everything.  Enjoy the journey” is our motto and although my fellow travelers gently had to remind me of our motto, I did come around.  I think the other word that was used was Tranquilo!  Clearing through security, we made our way to the end of the international terminal where our plane, an A380 big boy, awaited to transport us to London.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   We boarded and pulled out from the terminal a little before 4 in the afternoon.  After a 10 hour flight and sleep totaling about 2 hours each, we arrived in London at 10 am their time.  For some reason, the folks at British Airways separated Doug and Barb from Lynda and me when we made our last flight to Dublin.  The airline changed their flight from ours so we left them in London to fly to Dublin because they had a later flight.  However, as Doug stated when we hooked back up in Dublin, they can separate us for a time, but they can’t keep us apart!  It’s now 6:15 pm and we are in our hotel in downtown Dublin resting up so we can go exploring this evening.  Hi to everyone back home

Who needs sleep when the journey to Northern Ireland has begun?

We  left Stanwood last night headed to Vancouver BC after having a “Taco Tuesday send us off to Ireland dinner” at Amigos restaurant.   Arriving at the Canadian border, we were

inching along as each car ahead of us took its turn speaking with the border agent.  It didn’t take long before the catcalls began raining in on me for apparently choosing the wrong and SLOW line. Not to be outdone, I think I almost had Barb convinced that the Canadians would really appreciate an impromptu test of their border security system and that she should exit the car and take off running to see what would happen.  Before Barb could get the back door open to exit the vehicle, Doug finally prevailed on her to remain in the car until after we cleared the actual border area.  We arrived at our hotel and everyone made it to bed by 11:00 pm.  A 3 a.m. wake up call that came in ten minutes early leaves little time to sleep.  We arrived at the Vancouver airport by 4:30 a.m. and cleared security with sufficient time for the quilter in our group to take note of and request a photo of a Vancouver Airport men’s room wall.  She said she wanted a picture of it for a “quilt”.  Uh huh.

The flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles was quick, quiet and uneventful.  We await a 3:50 p.m. British Air flight to London and have been hanging out in the Alaska Airlines Board room enjoying their food and free well drinks.  I know, I know….drinking at 10:45 in the morning?????  Please understand that we have already switched to Ireland time and in reality its already 6:45 p.m. in Ireland……a perfect time for a well drink.

Final preparations are underway and our adventure starts tomorrow.

Our itinerary is full, bags are all packed, passports in hand, and the excitement is building.  After I get off work tomorrow, we leave for Canada to catch our Wednesday 6 a.m. flight that will take us on our round about way to arrive on the Emerald Isle.  Vancouver BC to Los Angeles to London and then to Dublin.  This photo shows that Doug and I are serious about blending in with the locals once we arrive.  Thanks to Jesse Haas for this contribution to our trip prep.  Heaven help the good folks of Northern Ireland.

Now, it is almost time for the Emerald Isle

Wow, what an adventure to Italy we had!  Here we are, a little after one year from when the four of us returned from that dream trip to Italy, and we are restless to travel again.  This time, we set our sights on Ireland and Northern Ireland….and as our friend Katherine in Belfast tells us, two very distinct countries.  So, in three weeks off we go with our adventure caps strapped firmly to our heads to visit Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Final Thoughts

Our decades long planned trip of a lifetime to Italy is complete.  Starting our return from Rome at 7:00 pm Pacific time last Friday night, we made it home after three different airplane flights and twenty-six hours later.  Whoo!  That was a long day.  Thanks to Jose for picking us up at the airport.  Arriving at their house to transfer cars, four year old Jemma came flying outside to leap into our arms.  Hugging her tightly she politely asked, “Are you all done with Italy?”  We assured her that we were and that we were glad to be home.

What a trip!  Four country bumpkins take off for a foreign country we’ve never been to, armed only with internet research and various online reservations at each anticipated step along the way.  On reflection it seems pretty remarkable that EVERYTHING went so smoothly, without a hitch at all.  All hotel rooms or villas or rental cars or train tickets or boat trips or other planned excursions were there and waiting for us as we arrived at each location for that segment of our trip.  I kept expecting there to be some reservation or something that dropped along the way and we’d have to deal with it.  Nope, that never happened.

In our 31 days in Italy, we witnessed many, many amazing things, thousands of years old and breathtaking all at once.  We were repeatedly welcomed and treated with such hospitality by the Italian people we interacted with (Well, except for that store clerk in Venice regarding my attempt to use an extra plastic bag; and Doug’s toll booth person as we attempted to escape from Bologna (bye bye………..bye bye!)…….then there was that “delightful” man that Barb met who was sure that by Barb sitting on the ancient toilet in Ostea Antica outside of Rome, his children would never live to see these two or three thousand year old toilets.  Really?,?)  Anyway, with those very few exceptions, the Italian people were absolutely wonderful to us and could not have treated us better.

Italian wine, table wine, bottled wine, red wine, white wine, prosecco, 99 cent wine, expensive wine……..all amazing.  We learned about and partook of digestivos, those interesting small after dinner sipping drinks that tasted wonderful and actually helped us digest the meal we just ate.  And eat we sure did!  I believe I had pasta everyday for 31 days in ways I’ve never tried or imagined before.  There were various meats prepared for us that I’m still shaking my head at that I actually consumed them.  Most were pretty good (with the exception of that disemboweled squid body in Venice I couldn’t bring myself to finish).

We met some new friends in Italy that were real gems, like Irene in Pergine Valdarno, Giovanni and Miriam in Sorrento, and the owner and staff at our favorite restaurant in Chiusi, Tuscany, Osteria La Solita Zuppa who when we arrived late as they were closing told us, “for you we are never closed!”.  Each of these people went out of their way to make our stay with them memorable and again amazing.

For Lynda and me, this truly was a dream trip.  That we could undertake it and experience it with our lifelong friends Doug and Barb is again the stuff that dreams are made of.  When you spend 32 days alongside of anyone…friend or foe…..night and day, that time together will usually give you your fill of that person and you’re ready for a break.  I don’t know if it is a reflection of the Stockholm Syndrome at work among us (where you become friends with your kidnappers) or if we really do like each other so much, but from Day One to Day Thirty-two, the four of us got along great and at the end of the trip….we still really like each other.  And THAT I submit is another amazing fact!  Thanks to all who watched our travels through this blog, and thanks for all of those comments.  We talked about all of them and laughed along with you.

Finally, Proverbs tells us that “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth up the bones.”  There were no broken or dried up bones on this trip (other than Lynda’s big toe nail which after impact came completely off)…..but there was a lot of laughter.  A LOT of laughter.  With our best friends.  We are so blessed!!!!

Are you kidding me?

Well, it’s Friday morning and we are all packed up waiting for our landlady to come and check us out of our last Tuscan villa.  We will leave for Rome airport Hilton, our final destination before flying out early tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 7:00 am our time here (10 pm Friday night Pacific time).  We ate at our favorite restaurant in Chiusi last night.  Zucchini soup, tripe, and lamb.  I still can’t believe I ate that.  I won’t say that I will never eat that stuff again, but I can’t foresee the circumstances where I will.  Actually, nothing sounds as good to me now as a nice big cheeseburger  with onions and tomatoes.  Probably will have to wait to get home to have that.  Ciao for now!

Who let the air out of our heels?

The Camanoescapers are losing steam.  Today is Wednesday and we leave for home on Saturday.  Our energy level is probably at an all time low.  Our spirits are doing well and the laughter and jokes just keep on coming.  After 29 days on the road, talk is now turning to how things are going back home.  We all miss our puppies who are staying with Tracy and Neal Ross.  We’ve made some plans with our peeps back home to have dinner with them next week.  That will be good.

Tomorrow is our all day cooking lesson starting with a market visit at 10:00 am.  Can’t wait to add that lesson to the one we received while staying in Pergine Valdarno.  It is now off to find lunch somewhere.  Ciao!

Yup! Civita di Bagnoregio is amazing!!!!

Our trusty Garmin with the voice of Lucille (we’ve named her and that’s a whole “nother” story), led us without incident to the village of Civita di Bagnoregio.  This little village had its origins and was first settled during the Bronze age from XII to X century B.C.  Civita is the birthplace of St. Bonaventure who died in 1274.  It is extremely compact and it is like a a walk back through time.  Very cool.  Here is a brief photo journey of our visit.

It’s off to the hillside village of Civita di Bagnoregio

Here’s hoping our Garmin will lead us to this hillside village.  Looks pretty amazing and is supposed to be about 45-50 minutes from here.
